i'm totally into the idea of a finger party right now, made up of multiple bands, starting with a tracy sylvia friendship ring. these 14k gold handmade rings are so dainty and beautiful - especially when worn as a pinky ring or on your index stopping just above the knuckle. i have this ring on order and can't wait to work it into my daily rotation. i also love the idea of a double wire chain ring for the index finger, like this one in rose gold by made her think. put something a little more statement making on your middle finger like the isis stackables by dannijo or this chloe snake ring et voila! you've got yourself a stellar finger party.

i had the opportunity to chat with the amazing and very poignant Alberta Ferretti yesterday morning after viewing her spring/summer 2012 collection at Tootsies. thank you to Tootsies and American Express for hosting me and to the PR Boutique for a fantastic and successful event!

Lindley Arnoldy (The Flip Side): What do you think the differences are between the American woman and the Italian woman in terms of style? Who are you designing for?

I think that actually there is really no difference any longer between the taste in Europe and the U.S. and for that matter across the world. I think what there are more or less are categories and types of women. Today women travel, they have a very full social life, they have myriad newspapers and the internet to keep them up to date, so it's become...one world. You have bohemian types, you have ladies that like to dress up, you have different social strata, really. You have people that don’t like to [dress up] at all, you have people that are very involved socially that have different commitments and needs to dress up…it’s all over the world. And now for example, the best sellers are worldwide best sellers, it’s not that they’re best sellers in the U.S.

L.A: Hal Rubenstein said last night that his two favorite things in fashion are modernity and romance. I feel like that really resonated with me and resonates with your collection. Is that your point and intention?

Yes, I think that romanticism certainly for me is an incredible focus because a romantic woman today is not fragile in any way, she is a woman who is sure of herself and is free to express her sentiments, her emotions, her strength and that is what really renders the modern...woman.

L.A: This collection seemed to have many references with with everything from utilitarian influences to botanical prints and a nod to the 1920’s. What served as your inspiration?

(*My recording device was interrupted at this point, so this answer serves from memory) Ms. Ferretti told me that she her inspiration was very much the "travelling woman", and the “romantic jungle”.

L.A: How do you continually modernize your work, especially when you aren’t subscribing to the current trends?

Obviously, even if I don’t follow the trends we have to be aware of what is going on around the world because we live in such a global – fashion lives - in a global environment and we need to adapt ourselves to what is happening in the world around us. And while I try to always project a very up to date, contemporary, modern collection, I don’t necessarily follow the trends. But, my woman lives in the world of today, so she needs to adapt to the silhouettes and what is current in today’s world. For myself I keep up with everything, I read – I am an avid reader, I am a movie goer, I love music, I am a very social person out at events quite often, and I try to understand and perceive what my woman and eventual customer will need… living this really intense, global, fast life. I try to perceive through my knowledge of what’s going on in my own life what my woman will need in the future.

L.A: What are your views on competition? Do you look to other designers for inspiration? Do you feel that that spawns creativity or hinders it?

Obviously just like any other industry, within the fashion industry there is definitely competition and of course we all thrive on “the spirit of healthy competition”, but I think it is more and more important today for each designer to have a very recognizable signature. So while competition does stimulate creativity it certainly needs to be filtered through the perspective and the sensibility of each designer’s individual style.

as previously mentioned, i had the honor of sitting front row at the Alberta Ferretti Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show at Tootsies on Wednesday night. to say the least, the collection was beyond what i expected. i was so impressed with how elegantly and interestingly Ms. Ferretti updated the well-known romantic and feminine chiffon dresses and gowns in her collection with sheer panels, bright colors, botanical prints and drop waists.

enjoying the fall weather and rapidly changing colors all around. wearing adrienne landau rabbit fur vest (on sale here), t by alex wang dress, valentino rockstud flats, vintage chanel purse, korcula for kora pearl and horn bangle. most of the time, what i wear doesn't make a lot of sense, like pairing a rabbit fur vest with bare legs. i'm not the type of person who likes to match things perfectly. i work with what inspires me and strikes me at the moment. i believe style is based on intuition, and unpredictability in an outfit is what makes it incredibly interesting.

the new tom ford beauty collection, which is exclusively featured at five different department stores and sold online at neimanmarcus.com, is spectacular. the products are lasting yet perfectly lightweight and come in an amazing array of colors. the chic make-up artists, all clad in pussy bow blouses, pencil skirts and three-piece suits designed by tom ford himself, are extremely knowledgeable and eager to explain the distinct thought process behind the creation of each product. gabriel, the adorable artist who gave me my make-over, explained to me that tom ford beauty is all about the eyes; he believes a woman should always have a smokey eye. he also thinks lip liner is dated and a thing of the past, and he has taught all of his artists that blush should be the last thing applied to the face. this way, one can gauge the color for the cheeks based on the intensity of the eye.

one of my best friends - who also happens to be a new homeowner - recently asked me my opinion on whether or not she should get a white lacquered parsons desk for her office. i advised her to go for it; the piece is stylish and will update her look. i also suggested she invest in an antique desk chair to get a fantastic juxtaposition of old and new.

interior tip: pair a parsons desk with an antique french chair. try ebay to find great deals on antique french chairs, or find a replica and have it upholstered.

fall is all about working in fun textures like suede, knit, tweed, velvet, leather and wool. lace up booties are a must and you cannot beat the price of this topshop pair (they also come in red). a suede pump is so chic paired with a skinny leg pant and a little ruffled wool skirt like this one by carven is perfectly feminine when worn with tights and a silk blouse. cat eye sunnies are still all the rage....wear them with these burgundy flared cords (also avail in a gorgeous blue) by theyskens' threory with a patent leather skinny belt and sky high heels. an oversized knit, leather leggings and a classic flat is the perfect daytime fall uniform - comfy chic. structured, ladylike handbags are the current "it" style, and though i am saving up for this one i thought this edie bag by j.crew was the perfect alternative. finally, every girl needs a fantastic coat and the perfect pair of studs! shop all of my picks here:

leather is a huge trend this season and does not necessarily have to always be sexy + edgy but can be incorporated in a more ladylike, chic way a la olivia palermo. make sure you go for a fuller, longer length to get this effect. a rich, camel colored hue also makes for a more classic look. pair with a long sleeved silk blouse, booties and a pair of burgundy tights to be fall ready and bring in a fur vest as temps drop.

today marks the first official day of fall, and i for one cannot wait to start accessorizing for the cooler temps (that are yet to arrive in houston). hats are my go to accessory for fall; they can make any old pair of jeans look chic and an otherwise ordinary ensemble unique. i love the maison michel hats and the monogrammed M on the satin ribbon but since i cannot find them anywhere online, i found a similar (and more affordable) version c/o bec & bridge. i love venz edit's idea of monogramming the hat with your own initial to give it the maison michel effect on a personal note. get them here.

style tip: pastels are huge on the runway for spring 2012, wear you hat into spring next year and be on trend for the season.

two things i am very inspired by right now in the interior design world: painted black walls and rust colored silk velvet fabrics mixed with minty greens. i love the way the gold etegeres stand against the black walls and the look of the olive green couch and zebra hide. i have been thinking long and hard on how to incorporate some color into our living room in a muted way and i love the non-color effect of the rust and mint tones. now, time to source the perfect shade of black and the right fabrics...

i am exercising alot of restraint in resisting posting street fashion photos or anything from wang ss12 because, while i am totally tempted and inspired by the two from NYFW, i am aware of how inundated the blogosphere is with them right now. so, in an effort to bring fresh content, i present you with the t by alex wang panne velvet dress. i first saw it (top left) in the neimans book styled with a long coat, but am also imagining it for fall with a cropped fur jacked.

style it up with the right earring and a chignon or down with loose waves and your shaggy fur for a night out.

i love the femininity of a full skirt and how easily it can be countered with a tough ankle boot or long sleeve tee. this piece is so awesome for fall in it's ability to transform with layers. add a blazer, a little structured jacket or even a trench of the right length then pair with tights, a scarf and a hat and let the outfit unfold as the pieces come off.

fitz and the tantrums/rodrigo y gabriela/barefoot in the grass/with my love/with the band/brothers/upon arrival/leaving.

i recently hemmed this rebecca taylor white lace dress and it is like an entirely new piece in my closet. i love how a little alteration can change an article of clothing like that. my layering wasn't well thought out so it ended up over a black tank and my beloved stone cold fox lace shorts, but i think it would be so cool over this. also wearing zara saddle bag and topshop booties.

it was my first time to see fitz and the tantrums. such high energy and really funky. love the horns. also randomly caught some rad guitarists called the congress. check them out!

i love miroslava's style, and have since back when she had her longer locks and was making her debut on the sartorialist. this is one of my all time favorite looks of hers, but really she can do no wrong in my book. i love how she ties the red leather jacket into the pop of red on her peep toe loubs. this look is great for fall because it incorporates three major trends: leather, ladylike + black and white.
